I've been out walking
I don't do too much talking
These days, these days
These days I seem to think a lot
About the things that I forgot to do
And all the times I had the chance to.
I've stopped my rambling
I don't do too much gambling
These days, these days
These days I seem to think about
How all the changes came about my ways
And I wonder if I'd see another highway
I had a lover
I don't think I'll risk another
These days, these days
And if I seem to be afraid
To live the life that I have made in song
It's just that I've been losing so long
I've stopped my dreaming
I won't do too much scheming
These days, these days
These days I sit on corner stones
And count the time in quarter tones to ten
Please don't confront me with my failures
I had not forgotten them

about
A few months into the big 2020 lockdown, I found myself humming Jackson Browne's luminous "These Days" (and Nico's transcendent interpretation) obsessively. After several weeks of this, I realized why: The lyrics and emotional tone mapped eerily well onto the feeling of life at the time, the grief and resignation, the quiet stasis and anxious hope.
I recorded my own version of "These Days" slowly over several months with the help of a dear old friend and former ARMS bandmate, Dave Harrington (Darkside, Dave Harrington Group), who played bass, congas, and incredible-sounding lap steel. Sarah Register was kind enough to master the track.
When it was done, I realized the recording tapped into another familiar feeling—one I'd mined for years in my old music & life in New York City. ARMS was a pseudonym before it was a band, and it was reassuring to find that identity still hiding under the layers of change, something familiar to hold onto in the midst of all this.
So here it is, old and new, "These Days" by Jackson Browne by ARMS. Enjoy.
